Martin Weekly was born and raised on a ranch in Exeter, California, where he spent his childhood roaming the fields of his father’s farm, dreaming and sketching. He received his degree in art and began teaching high school in the 60’s. In 1969, he began selling his paintings in Carmel, California. By 1970, he was so successful that he was able to give up his teaching profession to become a full-time painter. Weekly has exhibited in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. His work was also illustrated in the book "Contemporary Western Artists" by Peggy and Harold Samuels. Says Weekly of his work: “Painting on location (plein air) is extremely important to me. I need to continually observe and capture with paint the moods and feelings nature presents. Light and shadows, as well as atmospheric conditions, are the elements that really make a painting ‘sing’; and these factors change so quickly it forces the painter to work rapidly. By working in this manner, it helps me keep my work ‘loose and impressionistic’ and encourages me to include only the important elements -- the essence of the painting.”
